I don’t have any problem with anyone: Waqar

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis says the lack of home internationals is a major hurdle to his young team’s hopes of climbing up the international cricket rankings. As no test sides have wanted to tour Pakistan since terrorists attacked the Sri Lanka team in Lahore more than two years ago, the team hasn’t had a choice but to hit the road.

“It’s tough. It’s never easy. We’re always touring and playing on different surfaces and we don’t know the pitches and conditions,” he said. “It’s very difficult to adjust every month or so. It’s four venues I’ve done in less than a year. You need to play home to get the confidence of the youngsters. That’s not happening so what we’re trying to do is taking the youngsters on the tour and trying to prepare them, which is the hardest part in cricket.”

Waqar also squashed rumors about a rift between him and Shahid Afridi, who was replaced as one-day captain for the Ireland series and has since withdrawn from the squad. “Misbah is great character. I am not saying that Afridi is not because he’s done a really wonderful job in the last six to eight months he’s been captain,” Waqar said.

“I don’t have any problem with anyone. It is sad how things are being written and all the issues being printed. We want to improve cricket and this is what we get. It is not fair, I guess.”

Ajmal’s bowling action doubted once again

Victory was, however, soured after West Indies legend Sir Viv Richards questioned Pakistan off-spinner Ajmal’s bowling action. Ajmal was the leading wicket-taker in the series and was judged the player-of-the-series after finishing with 17 scalps at 14.47.

“Let me put it as mildly and as diplomatically as it can be put,” Richards told ESPN cricinfo. “When you look at bowling actions for off-spinners in the world at present, the 15 degree rule has bred what we’ve seen in this series. I wouldn’t be blatanat as some others, but the rules have helped the freaky stuff we have at present. It accommodates doosras and things we see like that.”

Pakistan retain sixth position on ICC Test ranking

Pakistan have retained sixth position on the ICC Test Championship table after recording a convincing 196-run victory over the West Indies in the second Test in St Kitts to draw the two-Test series. Pakistan were in danger of swapping places with seventh-ranked West Indies after the home side had won the first Test by 40 runs in Guyana.

In the past eight years, Pakistan have thrice dropped to as low as seventh (June 2003, August 2005 and January 2010). However, the drawn series means Pakistan have conceded one ratings point and are now on 90 with fifth-ranked Australia 17 ratings points ahead and West Indies four ratings points behind. Meanwhile, Misbah’s third Test century has provided him a jump of eight places which has earned him a career-best ranking of 22nd. He is now the second highest-ranked Pakistan batsman after Younus Khan who is in 17th position despite missing the series. Taufiq’s fifth Test century has given him a boost of 20 places and he now sits in 53rd position. Umar Akmal is the other Pakistan batsman to head in the right direction as he is now in 35th position after rising two places following his innings of 56 and 30.

Pakistan A beats Afghanistan

Pakistan A beat Afghanistan by five wickets in the first One-day International at Diamond Cricket Ground on Wednesday. Afghaistan captain Nowroz Mangal played sensibly and made 33 runs. Essa played some lovely shots while wickets kept on falling from the other end. Man of the match Nabi Essa played a sheet anchor role and his innings of 72 runs was a treat to watch. Afghanistan innings was wrapped up at 152 runs in 37.3 overs.

Talha grabbed three wickets for 29 runs in 7.3 overs, Captain Sohail Tanveer and Sadaf Hussain got two wickets each. Promising left arm bowler Zulfiqar Babar and right arm leg break bowler Yasir Shah also took one wicket each.

Pakistan A started their innings in a slow style. Shan Masood and Sharjeel Khan started the innings for Pakistan A but Shan was soon returned to the pavilion. He scored 5 runs. Amin with Sharjeel took score to 76 before Umer was out for 29. Pakistan A achieved the target for the lose of 5 wickets.

Fine bowling from the Afghan bowlers, ably supported by their fielders caused panic to batsmen who kept on throwing their wickets away. Afghan ground fielding and catching was superb, the fielders never allowed any batsmen to take sharp single and did not allow overthrow run to the Pakistan players.

Srilanka rejects Pakistan tour offer in October on security

Sri Lanka has turned down an offer to tour Pakistan because of security concerns, the Sri Lankan cricket board said on Tuesday. “We have refused to tour Pakistan,” a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) spokesman said. “We are concerned about the security and that’s why we said no to them.”

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had been hopeful of coaxing the Sri Lankans into touring the country but Sunday’s Taliban attack on a naval air force base near Karachi’s National Stadium dealt a severe blow to the prospects.

Pakistan has not hosted international cricket since the Sri Lankan team visited the country in 2009 when gunmen attacked their team bus in Lahore, killing seven people. The PCB recently made another attempt to convince the Sri Lankans to tour Pakistan.

Ex-captain pulls out of Ireland series

Shahid Afridi has withdrawn altogether from two One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Ireland for personal reasons, an official said on Tuesday. The popular all-rounder was last week replaced by Misbah-ul-Haq despite leading Pakistan to the semi-final of the World Cup and a 3-2 one-day series win over the West Indies.

It was seen as apparent punishment by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for Afridi’s public criticism of coach Waqar Younis for interfering in team selection on the West Indies tour. “Afridi has informed us that his father has been admitted to hospital for liver treatment and he wants to be with him and would not be available for the two matches in Ireland,” and no replacement will be sent for Afridi, PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar told the reporters.

Pakistan outplay West Indies to draw Test series

Pakistan beat West Indies by 196 runs on the fifth day of the second test Tuesday to draw their two test series 1-1. Slow left-armer Abdur Rehman finished with figures of 4-65 as West Indies, resuming on 130 for five and needing to bat through the day to win the series, were bowled out for 230 before lunch. Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal did the damage with the key wickets of Brendan Nash (30), skipper Darren Sammy (41) and Ravi Rampaul (20).

It was always going to be too much for West Indies to bat through the day having already lost their top order but it was a sorry end to their innings when Kemar Roach was run out for 12. Any chance of resistance dissipated when Nash edged Ajmal to Taufeeq Umar at slip and then Baugh became the latest in a series of West Indies batsmen to fall lbw to Rehman. Sammy was caught at midwicket off a dreadful shot off Ajmal and although Rampaul showed some defiance, it ultimately proved futile.
