Still More Misleading Cases
Abdur Rahman Mian

**Disclaimer first**. If any one of you chooses to reward me with Rs 10, for my writing skills on current affairs, I would be obliged to return 999 paisas back. Since these coins exist no more, so please condone my inability to be ethically equitable.

I can’t write in the current prevalent diction of the print and electronic media. I must quote what I read or heard verbatim as thus; "On the flour of The House; a square meter of gas; half backed idea, drop irrigation; Cap Town; per capital income et cetera. By these “Bulls” you can get shocked or amused or both?

I always make my own mistakes and refuse to learn from them.

  • Emergency, should be vacated amicably, and as soon as possible. I have a funny reason that I’ll submit at the end of this column.

  • Media. An Honorable Judge of the Lahore High Court had once said: "No one should be, allowed to be the instigator, the prosecutor and the judge rolled into one person or legal person״.

Mark my word; I shall fail to convince you to any point of view: in the lines to follow. Mine is:-

“No one before thee dear Fatherland, not even I!”

Several decades, ago this scribe was learning elementary English language; starting smoking and enjoying other liquids and semi-solid vices. Because of the environment, buying and reading books became a habit, – unintentionally.

SPRING-TO-FALL CASES

Any public or personal library should be proud to possess books of the period with titles like: Sea-sick Whale; and Bulls (circ 1908) plus

  • Misleading Cases.

  • More Misleading Cases……….. and

  • Still More Misleading Cases.

If the publishers of the above series would have been in business, they could have published a unique final book.

The Honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan’s proceedings during Spring-to-Fall (2007) session would provide sufficient material for a book to be aptly titled: “Spring-to-Fall” cases.

The case history could be sub-divided into several chapters like:-

  • Limitations of jurisdiction/s.

  • Monopoly Media mix-up/s.

  • The Nouveau Force Mejeure.

  • Vulgar Visible Disparities.

  • The Driver and the Driven.

  • Suo Motu Factor.

  • Latent Fundings or Findings.

  • Obvious Fundamentals

  • Aborted Robin Hood Phenomenon.

(The relevant footage laced with gory & ghoulish images, could be resourced from the archives.)

Pakistanis, in general, and in particular must learn to respect:

Limitations of jurisdiction/s: theirs, as well as, that of others. It is an idea for which the time had come long ago. It must apply to persons and pillars of the state & polity – as well.

Our electronic media manifests the “New-kid-on-the-block”. It is energetic to the extent of being hyper. Most of their revenue accrues from hair-color and skin-care products. Any independent observer would be confused to realize; hair & skin care to be priority number one of this nation.

The nascent electronic media in Pakistan did have a historic responsibility and unique opportunity to set up graceful traditions. With quite a few exceptions, some of them did not choose to instill the pioneering spirit.

Through the good offices of the media, we are well aware of the circumstance prevalent in Afghanistan, Bangla Desh, Burma, Nepal, Northern Sri Lanka, Eastern India, Palestine, Lebnon & Iraq in addition to our own dear homeland. It’s painful. Of course: “Bad news makes good copy!”.

We would all love to stand-by our nascent media: For their rights and remedies. To reciprocate, should the media, as Nouveau Force Mejeure, not choose to promote some vital Social Engineering?

Some pretty media persons behaved like Biblical Delilah and verbally tried to clip bald, every Samson and deliver him to the Philistinean Judges. Their youthful male counter-parts displayed obvious Samsonean performances. They displayed a put-on impression that: they too could dislodge the pillars of the palace of the state, by vocal pushes, focal smirks or ridicule by synthetic mocks. Collectively they had discovered and lined-up a bunch of "self-styled subject specialists", who would submit, in turn, to several anchors – humbly and respectfully? A lot of honourable exception, not withstanding, though.

Being a citizen of Pakistan by birth and by choice, my choices seem to be limited. I revere Moulana Abdul Sattar Edhi, and have a great pride in our Motorway policing system. Mr Iftikhar Rashid, the current chairman of Pemra, is the pioneer who did set up the great traditions for the Motorway Police. We must respect an exceptional public servant. (In spite of a few tickets)

I felt personally slighted when an e.media person stated on camera: ״We don’t want to be regulated by a policeman!

It was very early in nineties, that a group of us Pakistanis flew from Hurmqi to Alma Aty – without visas!. It was a holiday, but immigration officials of the New Kazakhstan dutifully appeared to receive us at the airport. We all were genuinely surprised. We did discover, later, that all that welcome was due to the guidance & services, Mr Riaz Muhammad Khan, our ambassador, was providing to the new Kazakh state. Few locals knew about his professional contributions, but a whole lot more of people knew about the excellent social work Mrs Riaz Mohammad Khan had been performing.

Mr Abdullah Yousaf, the CBR Chairman has introduced a culture and regime for the tax collectors to accord respect & trust to the – tax payers. Any one could verify that fact by the ever-increasing tax revenues of the state.

It would be grossly unfair, not to respect the financial genius of Syed Salman Shah. After a meritorious service, as secretary Petroleum & Natural resources, Mr Waqar Hassan is now the secretary for Finance and Economic Affairs.

It is certain, Munich-Re. and Swiss-Re would be willing and eager to reinsure, at the lowest premium, the water & power project/s that Mr Tariq Hameed may promote during his short stay at the ministry.

Syed Said Kamal Shah, as Inspector General police Baluchistan, has a commendable track record of his tenure of service in that troubled province. In addition to the stable law and order, he had been striving to resource reliable development for Baluchistan.

This scribe is very comfortable to know that the aforestated and several other elite group of unassailable professionals are managing the affairs of the state, in which I and my grand son choose to live. To shove and shuffle them for peony errands is not acceptable to me.

Please permit me to quote a single incident for the sake of record. Sarwar Sukhera alongwith a bunch of bright young persons, used to publish a light hearted Urdu magazine, during Chief Martial Law Administrator Mr Zulifikar Bhutto’s regime. An army officer was a semi-permanent fixture at his 5 room humble office cum residence.

One not so fine morning, I was awakened to find Sarwar, his good wife and innocent children, visiting without notice. Sarwar told me that last months issue had some punctuation mistakes! And Mr Saeed Ahmed

Khan, a police officer from the presidency had warranted Sarwar to appear before him at VIP Lounge Lahore airport later during that day. Some how the dreadful outcome was averted. May be we should appreciate the quality of difference? May I also suggest that the young ladies of our media may research the contribution of Mohtarma Zeb-un-Nissa HameedUllah, the editor / publisher of Monthly Mirror? Let her legacy not be just a street’s name! Mohtarama Barkha Dutt of New Delhi may please be treated, as very special. Ms Dutt had in the recent past, contributed an article stating: (not verbatim) ״A secure and stable Pakistan is in the best long-term interests of India״. Our media Mughuls may accord some consideration, to this factor please.

Perma could, most economically, publish, the ongoing exceptional biography and the most wonderful contribution Ms Oprah Winfrey, has made and is making for betterment of three generations of United States. Her motto is: “SERVICE TO PEOPLE” Our schools of journalism could teach that as an essential thesis, for the new generation of e.media presenters. It would be highly rewarding for the nation.

Now it is up to our own dear lady Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to appreciate the current ground realities in Pakistan. Not withstanding the external vocal volleys, the true test challenges her pragmatic perceptions.

Under the current circumstances a prompt political compromise is the only pertinent solution. It has to be equitable.

This once Mian M. Nawaz Sharif, Mian M. Shahbaz Sharif and family should be welcome, by all organs of state and their party members – before the elections.

One does not have to be a political pundit to read what is written on the wall with a sub-title in Braille. Simply stated, a sort of an 18th amendment maybe the pre-requisite for paving the path to the smooth transition. Nomination of Makhdoom Amin Fahim for the interim duration, if opted, shall certainly accord the instant solution and elevate her status to be the only stateswomen of the Muslim world?

President Mr Pervez Musharraf shall, of course, prove to be gracious in second phase parlays and would look more graceful in designer sherwani. (An autographed portrait shall be welcome).

I am addicted to learning – the hard way. I had learnt that wise people learn from other peoples’ mistakes. With respect to being wise, I am otherwise. So only option I am left with, is, to learn from my own mistakes. Lo! and behold, the process to learn from one’s own mistakes is long drawn but delicious and unconventional. It is not my monopoly, please.

I wish I could have contributed my humble input towards the publication of the final episode of the: Misleading Cases.

Please condone my inability because of an incident that took place a very long time ago:-

The result of my final examination was to be posted on my school’s notice board. I had to wait for that. The British are very traditional. They don’t even have a written constitution. Their life, conduct, state & polity functions, are all governed by the pristine traditions and precedents.

It could happen only in Pakistan, that a bench of Honorable judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan was still in session (during mid-September 07) when a TV channel had announced "the decision" which they had yet to declare!

For me, I had to wait for the official declaration of my result. I had packed and arranged my pick and drop at the airport for my flight back home. A very nice Walsh girl from Pontyprid had very kindly consented to drop me at the airport.

My school results were unexpected. I had passed, although with a razor thin margin. I am sure, most of the younger generation of even United Kingdom of today, would hardly know the candour of Walsh people of the by-gone era. Although I was surprised by my result but my companion was certainly upset.

We two were just by ourselves while driving to the airport. We came to a "T" junction of the road and faced a notice in front. It simply stated: "AIRPORT LEFT". She veered hard her Hillman Minx, took a U-turn and brought me back to her home. Funny! They did have a room to spare for an alien.

We did have an argument. She, instead posed a question: How could you leave? When the airport (had already) left.

But for that incident I would have possessed & dispatched the “Still More Misleading Cases” treatises alongwith this piece.

Emergency Plus is like Virginia. People call her Virgin for short, but not for long!
