Body Diction
Abdur Rahman Mian

The body description that I learnt early and relish, eversince, is in Punjabi: "Gori Nha Kay Chappur Wichoun Nikili, Tey Sulphey The Lot Verggi." I can’t translate it. Patiala University must grant a Doctorate to the one, who could! Genuine journalists observe the body language of the principals for the real inferences. Which are often much more reliable, than the vocabulary?

Japanese are very clever. They invite their American customers to have a breakfast meeting – the very next day they arrive. Hosts know the visitors would have jet-lag body and mental fatigue. They would be less arranged, having crossed the International Date-line. Las Vega Casinos pump pure oxygen during wee hours in the gambling halls, to incalcate euphoria. Busy corporate executives cut short the front legs of the visitors’ chairs – to cut short their visits.

I do not have any access (or desire) even to the normal diplomatic quarters or power corridors. One has to rely, entirely, on the TV reportage. Our President Musharraf’s meeting with President Bush must have been in the ultra high security environment. So one had to watch, whatever was being officially released, thru electronic media.

It was obvious; our President House does not have a Maitre-de-Household. Or the benefit of an interior designer, who may have studied a minor course, in ergonomics. Somebody should have suggested comfortable chairs and image-enhancing lights for the crucial meeting!

High back "Chair" did not suit the commando President. And the seat height of the chair was too low for the Texan President. President Bush’s knees were certainly, higher by good 99mm above the low density polyurethane seat cushion!! The same disparity looked along the horizontal axis! TV lights had no consideration to Kelvin, and camera height was inappropriate for the presidents. These chairs must have been the legacies of the political Nabobs? It was uncomfortable watching the proceedings.

"Ouaid e Azam, as governor General, visited Lahore in 1948. The jalsa was being held in the Lake road University Grounds. The stage was set up on the cricket ground masonry structure. A tall legged chair was resourced from the governor house. It was the type meant for British vice-regents, to step on a pedestal to clime into the chair. Some one must have enforced Quaid’s micro-management. The early visitors to the congregation saw that the chair legs were sawed off to size, just an hour before Quaid’s arrival."

A lot has, already, been discussed and dissected about the American President’s recent visit to Pakistan. Spokespersons say, it was a success. Some claim, it caused regional geopolitical imbalance. A few differ with both assessments. The follow-up visit, by US Secretary of Energy, had generated conflicting under-currents. The brand new American Assistant Secretary for South Asian Central Asian Affairs, had re-affirmed: "lasting partnership with Pakistan". Sceptics term this phrase, like the oft-repeated marriage vows of Hollywood actors. Sometimes between the same spouses!

A Pak-US Joint Statement on Strategic Partnership, had been issued during the visit of President Bush to Pakistan, in March MMVI.

The insiders of the international affairs would certainly certify, such joint communiqués are always drafted much before their actual releases. The wording is cleverly crafted, amended, improved, till agreed, by the diplomats on both sides – much before the visit/s and parlay/s. A pregnant pause – a side smile – or a feigned frown – at a "planted question" – all, are scripted and choreographed, precisely. Seldom, there is scope for an extempore expression, or gesture.

Mr Richard Boucher, in his exploratory press conference emphasized Four "Eeees": Economy; Education; Energy and Earthquake area Rehabilitation. The fifth "E" was preceded by two "Fs". That is: Free & Fair Elections in Pakistan.

He must have availed the immunity, accorded to him, by the relevant amendment of the American Constitution. That’s why be did not, choose to make any reference, to the C.E. 2000 elections of USA. Former US Secretary of State James Baker, an eminent legal eagle, had wrenched the 1st election victory for Bush Jr thru the Honorable offices of the Supreme Court of the United States!

For elementary introduction to the study of "Body Language", please look at the photograph on this page. Try different angles and perceptions. This is a historical portrait of President Hu Jintao and President Who! If you do not believe in the "Who" part, be advised, to wait for the fall during this fall’s, midterm elections in USA. The amicable chemistry of both the presidents is so very obvious!?

IF YOU THINK:

  • the press accredited, security cleared, female Taiwanese hacker created a minor incident, think again. And that the US administration’s apology was not a compounding incident? Please think once again. Hope you know: Taiwan is a renegade province of People’s Republic of China?

  • that the President Bush’s affectionate pull at President Jintao’s lapel was not rehearsed – you must be joking!

  • that during President Hu’s reception, the National Anthem of Taiwan was played, – and was a minor mishap. If you think so, you must be living in a paradise – where sane people don’t.
